Why I think International Women’s Day is a Joke this year

I found myself looking away from events, scrolling passed statements and snarling at messages all about International Women’s Day this year. At first I just thought I was cynical - “oh businesses cashing in on a gimmick, what are they actually doing?” And while this is a valid point, it’s not why I feel so nauseated by the ideas of International Women’s Day 2025.

Let’s get the obvious out the way before I get all the hate - Women should support each other, we should celebrate each other, and yes we have made steps forward in some ways…

Wait… have we?

Yesterday MP Jess Phillips read out the names of 95 women who have been killed in the last 12 months. She does this EVERY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY! So what is actually changing? Maybe we shouldn’t celebrate until she has no names to read -  even better, go on strike until she has no names to read.

What has changed? Tell me? I am actually asking?

We had complaints about nipples on the Brit awards, another mass rapist making the headlines yesterday, a female nurse used as a scapegoat and facing life in prison (look it up), Kayne’s NAKED silent accessory that we all just accepted.

“If we had a daughter, I'd watch and could not save her

The emotional torture, from the head of your high table

She'd do what you taught her, she'd meet the same cruel fate

So now I've gotta run, so I can undo this mistake

At least I've gotta try” - Labour, Paris Paloma

And do I event need to spell it out - Trump and Tate? The acceptance of them dribbles and leaks into the minds of weak individuals who use them as an excuse for their abhorrent views and actions. These underground views are now mainstream and people aren’t ashamed to expressed them.

We are still in a world where dick wagging starts wars.

We are still in a world where women do around 80% of UNPAID LABOUR!

But let’s not worry about that for IWD, let’s focus on the small wins…

I say…NO, We’ve had ENOUGH!

If we really wanted to make a stand for IWD, we would sit the fuck down. Don’t run huge events which probably goes straight into the pockets of men further down the line anyway.

We should let the lazy fuckers see how well the world functions when we refuse to play their game. This world was built on the ideas of men and we do our best, but we are regressing.

REGRESSING! Ozempic anyone????

Yes we should come together, but is it really time to celebrate? Or is it time to change the game?
